We live in a consumer society. Nothing you say or do can change that. Rather than be a dirty anti-consumerist hippie, you should embrace this fact and make the world work for you.
Ok, now that we’ve moved from denial to acceptance I propose that consuners should vote with their wallets if they want to make a real difference.
Buy products from companies that sponsor sports/charities/causes that you care about. Boycott companies that use photoshopped ads that make women you care about feel inadequate. Spend money on environmentally friendly products. Use the power of consumerism for good, or evil if you are that way inclined. As long as you do it with conscious awareness.

I agree with you 99.9% . I never agree with anyone 100% out of spite. In most cases this will work. The overall problem is that it often cost more to produce goods of this kind. Doing the noble thing in terms of the environment and health usually costs the companies more. And because we live in a capitalist society and these companies need to make a profit, the costs are passed down to consumers. There is nothing wrong with this IMO, I have embraced my inner capitalist. So as far as I can see, the problem comes down to the average consumer who can’t afford to make moral votes.
I have no references to prove any of what I say, it’s mostly guess work. But I think it at least applies to perishable goods.
